Spider Vein Laser Treatment

How does the laser treatment work?

The laser creates a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deep into the skin tissue where it delivers a controlled amount of therapeutic heat to the targeted blood vessels. This will cause the blood within the vein to clot, eventually destroying the vessel which is later absorbed by the body. Blood flow will then be redirected to veins deeper below the skin where it should be.

This long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser can treat a broad range of vessels on the face and legs, from tiny spider veins to deep blue reticular veins quickly, safely and effectively.

What can I expect during treatment?

Treatment will take place in the clinic. You will wear safety goggles to protect your eyes from the laser light. Your doctor will shine the laser beam to the treatment areas. A cooling plate and a cooling gel will protect the upper layers of your skin. Together with the laser, optimal treatment with minimal side effects can be expected. A treatment could take as little as a few minutes to as long as an hour, depending on the area being treated.

Does it hurt?

Some patients may feel a slight discomfort with each pulse, sometimes described as the snapping of a rubber band on the skin. This discomfort is minimized by the cooling plate and cooling gel. An anesthetic cream is applied one hour prior to treatment to maximize comfort too.

How many treatment sessions will I need?

The number of sessions depends on your skin response to the laser and the severity of your condition. Sometimes multiple treatments spaced 3 months apart are required to achieve optimal results.

Will my spider veins recur?

Depending on the size and severity of your spider veins, recurrence is possible. Sun exposure, cigarette smoking, oral contraceptive pills, pregnancy and prolonged standing (for leg veins) increase this possibility.

How can I prepare for treatment?

Your skin should be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Any makeup, creams, oils or self-tanning products must be removed before laser treatment. If you have a history of cold sores, please notify your doctor. The intended treatment area should not be exposed to excessive sunlight for 14 days prior and after treatment.

What can I expect after treatment?

An ice pack may be applied for comfort following your treatment. Any redness or swelling should resolve within that day itself.

What precautions should I take after treatment?

After laser treatment, prevent sun exposure by applying sunblock (SPF 30 and above). In the first few days after treatment, don’t scrub or rinse the treated areas with abrasive skin cleansers. Use a gentle cleanser instead.

Are there side-effects?

Your risks are minimal. Side effects may include redness, swelling, blistering, and bruise in the treated area – these usually do not last more than few days. Brown stain (hyperpigmentation) and bruise marks on the legs may sometimes take several months to fade completely. Be sure to discuss potential side effects with your doctor.

Are these treatments covered by insurance?

Most insurance companies do not offer reimbursement for cosmetic procedures. Consult your insurer for conclusive information.
